China Navigation Company Limited Sunning British

Steamship 1570 tons pirated off Chilang Point 180 miles

north of Hongkong on 15th November 4 p.m. four Indian

guards on board two do duty at one time. Guards housed

after well deck adjoining second class passengers. General

warning telegram cautioning ship masters of probable piracy sent by Hongkong police to Shanghai and Singapore police

on 8th November. Special search Sunning by Customs

authorities at Shanghai before leaving 12th November without

result. One or two leading pirates boarded Shanghai

steerage remainder Amoy three second class passengers rest

steerage total number of pirates 20 to 30. Arms smuggled

Amoy no search there. And ship left 9 a.m. 15th November. Starboard grille open but guards on duty. Ships officers arms in cabins at the time of piracy. Ship captured and looted pirates complete control until 1 a.m. 16th November when the officers by sudden attack knocked out pirate guards over the bridge, recovered two firemen and released other officers and passenger Lapsley ?who went below declined to stay on the bridge no trace. Held the bridge deck against attack. Pirates set fire to the ship in the Chief Officer's cabin underneath the bridge. Captain let go anchor ship swung round smoke diverted aft some pirates then abandoned ship in two dinghies aft ship lifeboat amidships on the bridge deck held by officers. One dinghy with ten men captured by H.M.S."Bluebell" at sea remaining dinghy fate unknown possibly swamped
